Obituary for Joanna M. Chatman

Joanna M. Chatman
Joanna M. Chatman was born June 10,1933 in Doylestown, PA. and the Lord called her home on July 11, 2018. She was the fifth of six children born to William Henry Maultsby, Sr. and Joanna Ann (Hagans) Maultsby.

At a young age she attended the First Baptist Church of Doylestown for Sunday School. And she has been a member of Second Baptist Church of Doylestown for more than 80 years. She accepted the Lord Jesus Christ at an early age and has loved serving the Lord in several capacities; She had served as Chairman of the Deaconess Ministry, Treasurer of the Pastor’s Aide, President of the Sanctuary Choir, Senior Choir, Usher Ministry, Women’s Ministry, and the Willing Workers Auxiliary. Joanna loved singing, enjoyed ushering and fund raising for her church. She loved her church and her pastor very much. Joanna had a special relationship with every church she fellowshipped with.

Joanna graduated from Buckingham High School and at the age of 49 went back to school and received her Associates Degree in Social Work from Bucks County Community College.

She retired from Bucks County Children and Youth – Social Services. She was a member of the Doylestown Fire Company – Ladies Auxiliary for over forty years. She was a member of “Just Us Gals” of Bucks County whose focus was to introduce African-American youth to their heritage. Joanna was also a Candy Striper during the Korean War.

Joanna was a very stylish woman, a trait she inherited from her mother. She didn’t feel completely dressed unless she wore a stylish hat, with a matching pocketbook and a pair of designer shoes. Oh, and we can’t forget the coat, gloves and scarf.

She was a very friendly person and wherever she went people remembered her. Joanna always left an impression on those she came in contact with.

She was affectionately known as “Sis” to some and “Peaches” to others.

Joanna loved traveling so during her life she traveled abroad to countries such as Japan and Israel to name a few and she’s been to California, Hawaii, Nevada and every state east of the Mississippi. She enjoyed cruises, traveling by plane, train or car to arrive at her respective destinations. She truly enjoyed life and living.

In recent months when Joanna became ill, she was known to say on almost a daily basis, “Who is going to tuck me in tonight?” We know for sure that she is in heaven and now it is Jesus’ turn to “Tuck her in.”

Joanna was married to Staff Sergeant Hearold Kingsler Sammons and Louis Dean Chatman, Sr. both who pre-deceased her. From these unions she had five children; Doreleena S. Hackett (Ronnie), Shelia D. Roberts, Craig A. Sammons (Natacha), Darryl K. Chatman, Louis D. Chatman, Jr. (Dawn).

She has twelve Grandchildren; Jaclene, Marques, Stefan, Ethan, Zachary, Darryl (DJ), Makayla, Taiden, Mariah, Tryce, Chaisen, Rodney, Monique, Eric and Shonte. And three Great-grandchildren: Alexa, Jacob and Aikayla.

Joanna was pre-deceased by three brothers: William Henry Maultsby, Sr. (Elizabeth), Robert Maultsby, Lenox Maultsby (Marie), and one sister Rachel M. Scesco (Oscar), two brothers-in-law: Girard Sammons, Donald Sammons (Inez), one sister-in-law Rena Gibson (Earl), one step-daughter Rita Chatman and one niece Renee Maultsby.

She leaves to mourn one brother Arthur Barney Maultsby (Lolita), and one sister-in-law Sachiko Sammons and nieces and nephews: Treena, Earlene, Alvetta, Tonya, Denise, Billy, Lenny Jr., Michael, Michele, Terry, Angie, Donnie, Mark, Michael and Bruce. And a host of other relatives and very, very, very close and dear friends whom she loved very much!

The funeral service will be held at the Second Baptist Church of Doylestown, 6055 Swamp Roaf, Fountainville, PA 18923 on Saturday, July 21st at 11:00 am. The family will receive their friends from 9:00-11:00 am at church prior to the service.

Interment will follow in Doylestown Cemetery, Doylestown, PA.
