Wilfredo Mercado, age 82, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, October 24, 2023, in Doylestown, PA, after a long battle with Alzheimer’s disease.
He was born on July 29th, 1941 in Arecibo, PR to Aida Delgado and Gregorio Mercado. He was raised by his loving step-father Carmelo Rosado. He was a brother to Myrtelina, Olga, Margie, Sonia, and Miguel Ángel. He was a beloved spouse to Rosemary Mercado for 60 years. They were devoted to each other and Rosie cared for him until his last breath. Wilfred served in the Army from 1959 through 1961, during the Cold War and was stationed in Germany. After he married Rosie, he worked as a lab technician and later owned and operated a local hardware store.
Wilfredo Mercado was a remarkable individual who touched the lives of many. Although, he and Rosie never had any children of their own, he was blessed with four nieces, Irene, Lourdes, Jacqueline and Miriam; five nephews, Mark, Steven, Ricardo, and Roberto, Eddie Jr., 3 grandnieces, Camille, Lilia, and Adeline, 5 grand nephews, Luisito, Lorenzo, Nicholas, Liam, Seth, Ceci, David, Dominic, and one great grandnephew Dante along with countless godchildren. At any given time, throughout his life you would find Wilfred surrounded by his flock of kids. They will all remember him for his lightheartedness and his funny antics and corny jokes.
Wilfred was a great in-law, he loved his mother-in-law Dolores, and had a great relationship with his sister-in-law Aida and his brother-in-law, Gerald. He made them laugh all the time. His father-in-law, Geraldo treated him like a son and they shared a mutual respect for each other. Wilfred had a vibrant personality and a contagious smile that could light up any room. He had a great sense of humor and could always find a way to make others laugh.
His kindness and compassion knew no bounds, and he was always willing to lend a helping hand to those in need. When he owned his own business, a local hardware store, he took care of his young employees, John, Jerry, Gio, and Lorenzo. He mentored and encouraged Giovanni and Lorenzo to go back to school and pursue a career. He made a significant impact in the life of these young men and they remained close to him until the end.
Wilfred had a passion for learning and in his free time he enjoyed reading. He also found solace in nature while gardening and feeding the birds.
