Obituary for Capt. Russell K. Schulz (Ret.)

Captain Russell K. Schulz, USN (Ret.) of Doylestown, PA passed away at his residence surrounded by his family on Monday, September 4, 2023. He was 89.

Born in Milwaukee, WI to the late Albert and Lilly (King) Schulz, Russell resided in Cherry Hill, NJ before moving to Doylestown, PA in 1987.

Russell received a Bachelor of Science Degree in Science from the University of Wisconsin, Madison, WI and a Master’s Degree in Personnel Management from Central Michigan University, Mt. Pleasant, MI.

After teaching Chemistry and Physics at Lake Mills High School in 1957, he decided to join the Navy. His naval career would span 30 years. He served as Ground/Flight Instructor at VT-10 in Pensacola, FL, where he was honored as the Flight Instructor of the Year. Later duties included performing as the assistant Operations Officer and as Administrative Department Head at VP-28 in Barbers Point, HI, serving as Assistant Weapons Officer aboard the USS Kitty Hawk during which he participated in two Vietnam tours, reporting to BUPERS, Washington, DC. As Head of the Congressional Liaison/Ombudson Affairs, reporting aboard VP-17 as Executive Officer and later as the Commanding Officer of Patrol Wing Two at Barbers Point, HI, serving as Commanding Officer of Naval Air Station at Willow Grove, PA and Philadelphia, PA, and reporting aboard the NROTC Unit of the University of Pennsylvania as the Commanding Officer and Professor of Naval Science. He was authorized to wear numerous medals and ribbons, including the Legion of Merit.

Upon leaving the Navy, Russell became the Vice Pres. Of Delaware Valley University and five years later in 1992, became the Director of Operations/Vice Pres. At Spring Garden College in Philadelphia. He was the Former Executive Vice President of the Freedoms Foundation at Valley Forge, Past President of the Rotary Club of Doylestown, member of the Scottish Rite of Freemasonry, Shriners, AMVETS, Fleet Reserve Assoc., The Retired Officers Assoc., American Legion, Americans for Native Americans, Veterans of Foreign Wars, Military Order of World Wars, and Boy Scouts of America in Doylestown.

He was the beloved husband of 66 years to the late Marilyn R. Schulz; devoted father of Capt. Dennis A. Schulz, Russell Eric Schulz and wife Margaret Thompson-Schulz, and Sally Schulz; dear brother of the late Kenneth, Eugene and Anita; loving grandfather of Doug and Dennis Schulz Jr.; cherished great-grandfather of Olivia Schulz; also survived by nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews.

A memorial service will be held at the Doylestown Presbyterian Church, 127 East Court Street, Doylestown, PA 18901 on Saturday, October 7, 2023 at 11:00 am. The family will receive their friends from 10:00-11:00 am at the church prior to the service.

A luncheon will follow in the church Fellowship Hall immediately following the church memorial service.

Committal service with military honors will be held at Washington Crossing National Cemetery, 830 Highland Road, Newtown, PA on Monday, October 9, 2023 at 9:30 am.
