Obituary for Valerie Miles

Again, our hearts are crushed as our beautiful angel, Valerie Miles, went with Jesus and her brother Bennett Slack, her daddy Miles Slack, and many friends and coworkers from the AIDS epidemic and the September 11 attacks.

Valerie passed on January 24th at her Bucks County home with loving family by her side. She was so courageous throughout her struggle with illness and cancer caused by 9/11.

Valerie was a graduate of Central Bucks East class of 1978 and attended Bucks County School of Beauty Culture, John Robert Powers School of Modeling and West Chester University. She obtained her Series 7 License and became a successful Securities Trader on Wall Street and was an experienced Financial Advisor. Her passion and fun was her financial business.

Valerie was a “Jill of all Trades” like her daddy Miles. She loved the outdoors. She was a farmers daughter, and was an accomplished equestrian in her younger years. She learned to roller blade along the beaches of Ft Lauderdale, and then during her life in NYC, she loved blading along the Esplanade in Battery Park City.

Valerie was a talented participant in the Miss America Scholarship Program. She was crowned Miss Bucks County and Miss Philadelphia, and was 2nd runner up to Miss Pennsylvania. She developed her love of vocals and music and enjoyed singing cabaret with lifelong friend Bob Egan.

Valerie forged many lifelong friendships with her gift of bright positive ideas and encouraging words. She was a wonderful and fiercely protective friend and mentor to so many. She was always straightening her friends’ crowns.

Valerie is dearly loved by her husband, Philip Capolongo. Cherished by her parents Wanda and the late Miles Slack, by her siblings, late brother Bennett, sister Brenda Foster and brother Guy; by step niece Jamie Foster (Sean Cockerill), niece Pavane Buck (Kyle) and their babes , Val’s grand nephew and grand niece, and nephew Ashton. Also by her step son Michael Capolongo and step granddaughter; and step daughters Michele and Jackie.

She will be greatly missed by her many friends whose constant love and support sustained and strengthened her throughout her life. She touched each one of us in such a way that she will never be forgotten. Always the smile, always the “thank you”, and always “I love you”.

At the request of the family, an interment will be held privately.

A letter to Valerie

Dear Valerie,

Though we need to weep your loss, you dwell in that place in our hearts where no storm, or night, or pain can reach you. Though your days were cut short, your spirit is alive.

We look toward each other no longer, from the old distance of our names. Now you dwell inside the rhythm of breath, as close to us as we are to ourselves.

Though we cannot see you with outward eyes, let us not look for you in memories only. You would want us to find you in the presence of all you loved.

Through the seasons of our lives may you continue to inspire us, with your courage to enter each day with a generous heart, until we see your face again, in that land where there is no more separation, where all tears will be wiped away and where we will never lose you again.

Rest In Peace, Our Angel.
John O’Donohue Adapted
