Obituary for Madeleine E. Arnold

Madeleine Elizabeth (Knoll) Arnold, 95, passed away peacefully with family by her side on Tuesday, January 17, 2023 at Elm Terrace Gardens in Lansdale, PA. Born in Vermilion, Alberta, Canada on February 10, 1927, she was the daughter of the late Dr. John and Angela Mathilde (Lavallee) Knoll.

She earned a Bachelor's Degree in Occupational Therapy from the University of Toronto. Her career eventually led her to Oklahoma, where she met her husband of 27 years, George. They started their family in Oklahoma, shortly thereafter moved to Bloomington, MN, then South Natick, MA, and finally Doylestown, PA in 1972. Madeleine enjoyed being a homemaker, but also worked part time at the Teasel Gift Shop in Doylestown and worked as a silk flower arranger at a shop in Lahaska. After George passed in 1981, she worked at Thomas & Betts in Doylestown until her retirement in 1991. Madeleine maintained her Canadian citizenship, and was always happy to meet people in the U.S. from other countries.

Madeleine was an active parishioner and volunteer at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church in Doylestown. She attended daily Mass and brought Holy Communion to the homebound. She loved to pray the Rosary and attended many spiritual retreats. She had a lifelong passion for volunteering, including many years doing food prep for Meals on Wheels, working at clothing drives, soup kitchens, and wherever she was needed. While a resident at Elm Terrace Gardens, she spent many hours knitting hats and scarves for infants and the homeless. Madeleine had a flair for cooking, rarely following a recipe, but producing meals worthy of a 5-star restaurant. Her other creative pursuits included sewing, knitting, crocheting, gardening, flower arranging, and watercolor painting.

Madeleine will be missed by all who knew her. She is survived by her children Mark, Steven, Teresa (Mike Fink), Barbara Low, and Karen Tartaglia (David); grandchildren, James (Aleksandra), Zackary (Neha), Megan, Sophie, Nicholas, Sarah, and Christopher; and great grandchildren Maximilian and Felix. She is also survived by many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband George, son Michael, granddaughter Amanda, five brothers, George, Jack, Jim, Alan, and Gerald and three sisters, Mary- Louise, Catherine, and Frances.

On Saturday, January 21, 2023, friends will be greeted at 9:30am for visiting hour followed by a Funeral Mass at 10:30 AM at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church, 235 E. State Street, Doylestown, PA.

A private burial will be conducted at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Doylestown FISH or another charity of your choice.
