Obituary for Dr. Gerald (Jerry) MacDonald

Dr. Gerald (Jerry) MacDonald passed away on September 29, 2022 at Pine Run Community.

Born in New York City, he was the son of Robert and Rose MacDonald. Jerry earned his Bachelor of Arts degree from Queens College, his Masters of the Arts from the University of Iowa, and his Doctorate from the University of Pennsylvania. Jerry also took a hiatus from his studies to serve three years as an officer in the U.S. Navy during the Cold War. Being a lexicographer and romance philologist, he was a scholar in the true sense of the word. Jerry was fluent in Spanish and Italian and was on the faculty of several universities where he taught graduate courses. Jerry’s last professional appointment was as a curator at the Hispanic Society of America in New York City.

He was predeceased by his daughter Geraldine (Deena) MacDonald Andrus. He is survived by his wife Gameela, his daughter Dr. Mary MacDonald, his grandson Mark Edward Andrus, and his son and daughter-in-law Capt. Edward Y. Andrus (USN Ret.) and Lori Andrus. Also surviving are his brother and sister-in-law Robert and Linda MacDonald and four nieces.

A memorial mass will be held at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church, 235 E. State Street, Doylestown, PA 18901 on Friday October 14, 2022 at 10:30 am. A gathering will be held from 9:30 am to 10:30 am prior to mass.
