Obituary for Arthur James Balek

Art was born on June 25, 1935, in Chicago, Illinois. He grew up in an ethnic neighborhood where he attended Slovak Church and grammar school across the street from his home. His parents, Mary and Stephan raised Art and two other sons, Stephan Jr. and Richard, plus two daughters, Mary Lou and Judy. Art and brother Rich attended St. Patrick's High School in Chicago and Art then received a bachelor's degree from Notre Dame University where he studied Civil Engineering. Later on he received a mater's degree in city planning at UNC, Chapel Hill.

After finishing his education, Art worked for the Federal Government. His first assignment was in the Everglades building bridges. He was then assigned to Washington, DC, where he built the bridges along the Potomac River. Later he worked indoors as a City Planner for the Federal Government until his retirement.

During his time in D.C., Art met and married Maureen Sullivan and they had four children, Art Jr. (Isla), Kelly (John), Kerry, and Sheila (Michael). Sadly, Maureen died too young at the age of 50. Several years later, Art and Hildegarde (Frankie) Kroll, also widowed, and the mother of Karen (Robert), Anita (Brian), and Michele (David), married and created a blended and loving family with 12 grandchildren as well. Art was a loving and beloved husband, father, granddad, friend and now also great grandpa. A caring, humble, and wonderful man who will never be forgotten by those who love him.

A memorial service will be held at St. Paul's Lutheran Church, 301 North Main Street, Doylestown, PA 18901 on Saturday, July 30, 2022 at 11:30 am. The family will receive their friends from 11:00 -11:30 am prior to the service.

Cremation and interment were private.
