Obituary for Matthew P. DeVito

Matthew P. DeVito, age 94, of Doylestown, PA passed away at his residence on Wednesday, November 24th, 2021.

Born and raised in Trenton, NJ, Matt graduated from Seton Hall University with a Bachelor of Science in Political Science. He began his lengthy career with John Hancock Companies in 1953. Throughout Matt’s thirty-three Hancock years he received a long list of awards and achievements and was proud of earning his CLU designation.

Matt served in the U.S. Army in WWII where he received the Asiatic Pacific Campaign Medal and was a member of the 40th military company’s champion boxing team. He was also an avid player of tennis, racquetball, squash, and handball and was a past champion of many tournaments. He was an avid fisherman his entire life.

He was a devoted and loving husband to his late wife, Nancileigh (McCaleb) DeVito, to whom he was married for 50 years. Matt was very proud of his Neapolitan-Italian heritage. He lived each day to the fullest. He was always the life of the party and entertained his family and friends with his many jokes. He loved making wine and going out to eat on Friday nights with his pack of friends. He loved his mother’s cooking and especially loved having her Christmas Eve feast with all his family and Christmas caroling with his daughters, niece, and nephews. He was so proud of and adored his 5 grandchildren Christopher, Warren, Luke, Greta and Morgan.

Son of the late Andrew DeVito and Philomena (Ferrare) DiMatteo; brother to the late Mary Cenerino and brother-in-law to the late Elizabeth Hanke. His first marriage was to the late Fay ‘Dolly’ Papa. He is survived by his two daughters and son-in-law, Desiree DeVito, Valerie and Thomas Fowlie; step-son, Christopher Beck and wife Helen; daughter-in-law, Tammy Hartwell and husband Greg; sister, Kathleen Santosusso; brother-in-law, Manfred ‘Muff’ Cenerino; five grandchildren, Luke Fowlie, Greta Fowlie and husband Lap, Morgan Fowlie, Christopher Beck and wife Amanda, Warren Beck and wife Liz, and many loved nieces, nephews, and other family and friends.

A memorial mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m on Saturday, December 11th at The Church of Saint Ann, 1253 Lawrenceville Rd., Lawrenceville NJ 08648.
