Obituary for Mary Ann Pitts

Pitts, Mary Ann Gothier

Mary Ann Gothier Pitts, 84, of Doylestown, Pennsylvania, formerly of Bonita Springs, Florida and King of Prussia, PA, died on Sunday, October 24, 2021 from complications of Covid-19.

Mary Ann was born on January 27, 1937, in Philadelphia, PA to George and Ann (Malloy) Gothier. From a very young age, Mary Ann loved math. As a student at Montgomery County Community College, it was easy for her to choose a major. She earned a bachelor’s degree from Gwynedd Mercy College and a master’s degree from Arcadia University. She went on to have a rewarding career as a mathematics professor at the place where she began, serving as a member of the Montgomery County Community College faculty for 25 years before retiring in 2003. Inducted into the Alumni Hall of Fame in 2015, Mary Ann continues to make an impact on students through a foundation scholarship she established for female STEM majors at Montco and through an endowed post-doctoral scholarship in mathematics bestowed in her honor at the University of Virginia in Charlottesville, VA.

Mary Ann was an accomplished bridge player and avid golfer who was proud to have made five holes-in-one. She and her husband, Bob, divided their time between Pennsylvania and Florida where they played with their many friends at Spring Ford Country Club and Copperleaf Golf Club. They also summered for years in Ocean City, Maryland and Townsend’s Inlet, New Jersey. Mary Ann was a devoted wife and mother and a true and loyal friend. She will be deeply missed.

Mary Ann and her beloved husband, Robert S. (Bob) Pitts, were married for 56 years before his death in 2012. She is also preceded in death by her brothers, George (Anne) and Jack Gothier. She is survived by her two sons, Robert S. Pitts, Jr (Betsy) of New York, NY, their children Emily, Margot, and Anna, and John G. Pitts (Brittany) of Doylestown, PA, and their children Duke, Wade, and Lucy, as well as many treasured nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Mary Ann’s sons, Rob and Jack, always said that they were lucky to have their first teacher be their mother. Mary Ann’s love and devotion to teaching endured until even a few weeks ago at the Red Barn Homeschool in Doylestown where she taught math in person to her younger grandchildren and other students. The project started as an antidote to remote teaching during Covid and continues today.

A memorial service and reception will be held at a later date when we can come together to celebrate Mary Ann’s extraordinary life. In lieu of flowers, please donate in her name to Montgomery County Community College in Blue Bell, PA.
