Obituary for Hazel Mitchell

Hazel Mitchell born on February 21, 1921 departed this life peacefully on Monday, November 2, 2020 at home with her son and daughter-in-law after a brief illness. Hazel was the daughter of Archibald and Esther Hargrove. She was the youngest of six children Arthur, Leroy, Albert, Marcella, Virginia all of which preceded her in death.

At a young age Hazel joined Zion AME Church. In 1954 she joined Nazarene Baptist Church in Philadelphia, PA where she remained an active and faithful member for over 50 years. On March 2, 2008, she joined The Second Baptist Church of Doylestown under the leadership of Reverend Robert E. Hamlin. She loved to hear the word preached by Reverend Hamlin.

Hazel worked for the Philadelphia School System for 39 years and retired in 1984 as a Food Service worker. After she began to have some health issues she moved in with her son and daughter-in-law in Roslyn, PA. The family moved to Horsham where they lived for 10 years before moving to Eagleville, PA.

Hazel spent a lot of time traveling with Center in the Park in Germantown before relocating to the suburbs. Even after moving Hazel loved attending area Senior Centers. She attended the Willow Grove, Ambler and Norristown Centers. She was very popular and enjoyed playing cards, Four corners was her favorite game.. She loved shopping and was always bringing home treasures she bought even if they didn’t fit her. Her favorite purchase was always “cookies and snacks” which she hid in her closet. She was always positive and rarely complained. Hazel’s most memorable statement when she came home from the center each day was “all those old people do is complain all the time”. She would tell them there is nothing you can do about it and they should be happy they are alive.

Hazel is survived by her only child Norman Hargrove and his wife Vanessa. She has one grandson Aaron Houston and his wife Danielle. Two great-grandsons Aidan and Troy Houston. God-daughter Jon'talise Robinson. She also leaves to mourn a host of relatives and friends.
