Obituary for Deborah A. Simonson

Deborah A. Simonson of Philadelphia, PA passed away on Tuesday, June 16, 2020 surrounded by family, in Chestnut Hill Hospital, Philadelphia, PA. She was 57.

Born in Hamilton, NJ, she grew up in the Greater Philadelphia area. She graduated from George Washington High School in 1980. She enjoyed living in Sandy’s House, a group home within the Citizens Acting Together Can Help, Inc. (CATCH) Program located in South Philadelphia.

Debbie loved visiting family and friends. She looked most forward to celebrating holidays and
making everyone feel special by hand selecting personalized cards, candy, and gifts. She was so excited about the act of giving, that she often spoiled the surprise by revealing what the gift was before it was unwrapped. She especially enjoyed spending Christmas with the children in the family, and she would go to great lengths to pick out the perfect outfits and toys for them.

At Sandy’s House, Debbie found her second family. She loved living there and made friends with all the residents and staff. She looked forward to daily program, singing in the choir, and group outings. When Debbie visited with family, she would always talk about the group home and how much the people there mattered to her.

She was the beloved daughter of Patricia Sullivan and the late Walter Simonson; dear sister of Denise Simonson and Walter Simonson, III; loving aunt of Michael and Michelle Wass, Krissy and Michelle Simonson; cherished niece of Ginny and Joe Mathews, Shirley Mathews and Ginny Wardell; also survived by cousins.

A memorial service will be held at the Varcoe-Thomas Funeral Home, 344 North Main Street, Doylestown, PA 18901 on Saturday, June 27th at 11:30 am. The family will receive their friends from 11:00-11:30 am at the funeral home prior to the service.

Donations in lieu of flowers can be sent to Jamal Lawler, Director of CATCH, Inc. at Sandy’s House, 521 Snyder Avenue, Philadelphia, PA 19148.
