Obituary for William H. "Bill" Elliott III

William H. Elliott III, of Point Pleasant, PA, passed away October 2, 2018, at the age of 76. Born in Oceanside, NY, to the late William H. Elliott II and Lois Knapp Elliott, Bill resided in Holmdel, NJ; London, England; Bernardsville, NJ; and Chicago, IL, before moving to Point Pleasant in 2009.

After Bill's 1960 graduation from Harborfields HS, Greenlawn, NY, he served honorably in the United States Navy aboard the aircraft carrier Shangri-La. He then attended McDaniel College, Westminister, MD, where he earned a BA in mathematics and was inducted into Phi Beta Kappa. Bill went on to Penn State University, earning an MS and a PhD in computer science.

Bill began his distinguished professional career at Bell Laboratories, the research and development arm of AT&T, in 1973. In 1979, he was appointed District Manager of Analytic Software, then Division Manager of Applications Development, and Division Manager of Systems Processing. From 1986 to 1989, he served as CEO and Managing Director of AT&T Unix Europe, LTD in London. Upon returning to the United States, AT&T promoted Bill to Vice President of Information Management Systems, then to President of the Advanced Decision Support Systems Unit.

From 1992-1996, Bill founded and was Managing Director of AT&T Ventures, a venture capital partnership that invested in information technology companies. In 1996, Bill left AT&T to accept a position as Executive Vice President and Chief Information and Technology Officer at First Chicago NBD Corporation (Bank One), until his retirement in 1999.

Bill was also very active as a volunteer and philanthropist. He served as the Treasurer of the Chicago Academy of Sciences and was a member of the Board of Trustees at McDaniel College, where he created and endowed a fund to support information technology. Also, he was a member of the Board of Directors of the Juran Institute and a Director of Mercantec, J3 Learning, Topometrix, and REVIVE Technology, Inc. In 1999, The Penn State Alumni Association named Bill an Alumni Fellow, the most prestigious award given by the Association.

Bill was the beloved husband of 46 years to Donna (Stefanik) Elliott; devoted father of Nicole Elliott and husband Mark Karvosky; dear brother of Diane Perullo, James Elliott, and the late Donald Elliott; loving grandfather of Catherine and William Karvosky; and dear uncle to eight nieces and nephews.
