Obituary for Charles Carroll Munoz

Charles Carroll Munoz
Charles Carroll Muñoz of Doylestown, PA died peacefully in his sleep on Feb. 22nd, he was 91.

Charles was born in Bronx, NY to O.A. Muñoz and Constance Stoutenburgh. He married Bernardine Martin in 1955 in New York, NY.

Charles started his career as an office intern and hospital orderly. He enlisted with the navy in WWII and flew with the Night Torpedo Squadron 53 as an aerial gunner in Grumman TBF Avenger torpedo bombers. After War II he worked as a United States Merchant Marine radio officer, sailed on freighters, tankers, and passenger ships, and on munitions ships bound for duty in the wars in Korea and Vietnam. Charles explored caves, walked the Southwest deserts, and wrote technical manuals on arctic survival and missile defense radar for the Air Force. He then chose more formal professions becoming a university English professor, an executive at Xerox, Grolier, Mattel, and finally vice president of Springhouse Corporation, publisher of medical books and magazines.

Charles loved reading and writing. He was a specialist in eighteenth-century literature, the List Bard of the H.M.S. Surprise Gunroom, a novelist, a science fiction writer, and especially a poet. He earned a Master’s degree from Columbia University and wrote his thesis on English poet Edward Young in 1953. Stowaway, his mainstream sea novel, was published by Random House in 1957. His science fiction short stories appeared in the 1950s and 1960s under the pen name T. P. Caravan.

Charles was elected Bucks County Poet Laureate in 1992 and spent five years as poetry editor of Jewish Spectator magazine. In 2001 Fragments of a Myth, a collection of his most read poems was published. He received four nominations for the Pushcart Prize of literature.

Charles leaves behind his beloved wife, Bernardine, his three sons, Chuck, John, and Rob, four grandchildren, a sister Judith Evans, and nephew Kevin Baker.
