Obituary for Joseph L. Reading Jr.

Joseph L. Reading, Jr. of Solebury, PA passed away on Wednesday, January 31, 2018 in St. Mary Medical Center, Langhorne, Pa. He was 90.

Born in Lambertville, NJ to the late Joseph L. Reading, Sr. and Ethel (Schermerhorn) Reading, Joe resided in New Hope most of his life until moving to Solebury in the early 1990’s.
He worked for the Union Mills paper mill in New Hope and later in building construction for Hanson Commercial Realty in Blue Bell, PA.

As a teenager, Joe enlisted in the Army during WWII and served with the Military Police in Darmstadt, Germany.

Joe was a life-long gardener and always had a friendly competition with his father over who would have the first tomato. He was the recipient of an award from Bucks Beautiful for excellent produce and flowers, which he was very proud of.

In addition to gardening, Joe focused his considerable parenting skills on raising his three children and being an excellent husband to Helen for almost 70 years. He was a character by any definition and had an innate ability to make everyone laugh with his malapropisms. He had many friends that just stopped by his garden to chat and one of them was Bud Funk with whom he shared his garden these last few years. Bud would plant and water and weed and Joe would inspect his work later in the evening, to the amusement of all who would see him circling the garden fence on his big blue scooter.

He was the beloved husband of Helen B. (Haas) Reading, devoted father of Star Grover and husband J. Peter Grover, David Reading and wife Catherine, Joseph Reading, III and wife Terry; loving grandfather to John Grover and wife Jennifer and Pieter L. Grover; cherished great-grandfather of Brandon, Chase and Pierce Grover. Joe was the last of his four siblings.

Joe touched many people in a quiet way. One of his many choice expressions was, “Man Dear” and he was, to all, a Dear Man.

Cremation services were private under the direction of the Varcoe-Thomas Funeral Home/Central Bucks Crematory, 344 North Main Street, Doylestown, PA 18901.

Memorial services will be private.
