Obituary for George Balas

George Balas
George Balas of Buckingham, PA passed away on Monday, January 22, 2018 after a three-year battle with cancer. He was 74.

Born in Philadelphia, PA to the late Godfrey and Edith (Knott) Balas, George grew up in Southampton, PA, graduating from William Tennent High School. He received a Bachelor’s Degree from Lycoming College, Williamsport, PA in 1965 before enlisting in the US Navy. He served as a Gunnery Officer aboard the USS Lexington (CV-16).

After his service, George moved to Buckingham and started his own coffee shop in New Hope, PA. He later became a Real Estate Broker establishing Homestead Real Estate for 32 years. George was an active member of the Nockamixon Sail Club, who enjoyed racing his Flying Scott, Silver Girl, and never missed the chance to race a nearby boat. With close friends from the “New Hope Navy” he celebrated most Fridays and shared many sailing adventures.

He was the beloved husband of 51 years to Linda (Skilton) Balas; devoted father of Wendy Balas Rupp and husband Robert; loving grandfather of Simon, Max and Lucy Rupp. He will be missed by many good friends.

A celebration of George’s life will be held on March 16th.

In lieu of flowers, join a friend on a Friday afternoon and raise a glass in his honor!
