Obituary for Joseph A. Thiroway

Joseph A.  Thiroway
Joseph A. Thiroway of Mount Carmel, PA passed away on Sunday, November 26, 2017 in Doylestown Hospital, Doylestown, PA. He was 85.

Born in Natalie, PA to the late Aloysius and Elizabeth (Katchmer) Thiroway, Joe was a lifelong resident of Mount Carmel, PA, before moving to Doylestown, PA in 2016.

Joe was a graduate of Bloomsburg University and received a Bachelor of Science Degree in Chemistry Education and a Master of Science Degree in Education from Bucknell University. He was formerly employed as a Science Teacher with the Shamokin Area School District in Coal Township, PA, where he taught Chemistry and Physics.

Joe was a member of Divine Redeemer Church, of Mount Carmel, was a member of the Knights of Columbus Council No. 628 and the Paulinarian Club through the church. Joe was a dedicated teacher and coach throughout his life, he coached football and basketball in the Ashland and Shamokin Area School Districts. He was honored by the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association (PIAA) Keystone Chapter for over 50 years of service and dedication as a football official. He was voted into the Bernie Romanoski Chapter of the Pennsylvania Sports Hall Of Fame as a PIAA official with over 30 years of service in football, basketball, and track. He officiated football and track until he was 75 years of age. He was a proud US Naval Veteran and served four years during the Korean War.

Joe was a huge University of Notre Dame sports fan, he and his late wife Anet attended ND football games for many decades. He loved spending time at Knoebels Grove, vacationing at Siesta Key, FL and enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren, great-grandchildren and spending time with family.

He was the beloved husband of 65 years to the late Anet “Sis” (Ficca) Thiroway; devoted father of Judy (Thiroway) D’Angelo, Joseph T. (Laura) Thiroway; and the late Janet M. (Thiroway) Greco; loving grandfather of Katie (Justin) Lauver, Meghan (Tim) Danowski, Rick Greco, Mike (Samantha) Greco, Elizabeth, Sarah and Joe Thiroway; cherished great-grandfather of Jack and Nora Lauver, and Joseph Danowski; dear brother of the late Patrick Thiroway, Sue (Thiroway) Lasko, Arthur Thiroway, Elizabeth “Lindy” (Thiroway) Lentini.

A viewing will be held at the C.J. Lucas Funeral Home, 27 North Vine Street, Mount Carmel, PA 17851 on Saturday, December 2, 2017 from 9:00-10:30 am.

A funeral mass will follow at Divine Redeemer Church, 438 W. Avenue, Mount Carmel, PA 17851 at 11:00 am.

Interment will be held in All Saints Catholic Cemetery, Elysburg, PA.
