Obituary for Jaromir Marik

Jaromir Marik
Jaromir Marik of Upper Makefield Township, PA passed away on his birthday on Wednesday, October 18, 2017. He was 92.

Born on October 18, 1925 in Prague, Czechoslovakia; educated in Prague from elementary school through 2 years of Law Studies at Charles University (which closed during the second world war).
At the close of the war and after the end of the German occupation, Jaromir was drafted into the Czech army, serving for two years.

Swimming was always an important activity in Jerry’s life and morphed into a seriously competitive sport. He participated in international competitions in water polo and individual events which led to him being selected to represent Czechoslovakia in the 1948 London Olympic Games.

In 1948, when the Communists seized control of the government, Jerry fled Czechoslovakia to a refugee camp in Germany and, putting into use his limited training in the field of law, went to work in the office directed to sort out the restitution to Jews of the property confiscated by the Germans. His opportunity to leave the refugee camp came when one of his many petitions for sponsorship to the West was answered by a Canadian Swim Club. In 1949, with many fellow refugees, he boarded a repurposed wartime Norwegian ship, “The Goya”, crossed the Atlantic and disembarked in Nova Scotia. From there he made his way to Toronto where he was able to earn enough money, working in a slaughter house, to make the trip to Montreal and join his sponsor. Jerry swam with the Canadian swim team for approximately two years.

While in Vancouver for a tournament, he said farewell to the swim team and enrolled in the University of British Columbia. In 1956 he obtained degrees of Bachelor of Commerce and Business Administration and a Diploma in Hospital Administration. Between the years of 1956 and 1957 he completed his Administrative Residency at Vancouver General Hospital. His working career began as Associate Administrator at a Kaiser Foundation Hospital in San Francisco.

A year later he relocated to Philadelphia, answering an offer to become Associate Administrator of Pennsylvania Hospital. In 1960, he was referred to the VIA to become the first hospital administrator of Doylestown Hospital. He began that job in March, 1960. Concurrently he held the position of Administrator of Neshaminy Manor from April, 1965 to January 1967.

In 1969 Jerry left Doylestown to serve as Senior Consulting Associate for Norman Brady & Associates, Inc. followed, in 1970, by taking the position as the Regional Director for Humana/Extendicare in the southern US states. He was then asked by the VIA Board to return to his former position at Doylestown Hospital which he did in September of 1970.

During his tenure at Doylestown Hospital there was significant growth due to the expanding community. The hospital relocated to its current location and went from a 60 bed facility to 213 beds including the addition of the first Physical Rehabilitation Center in Bucks County. During his final years of leadership at Doylestown Hospital he completed the planning and funding for a new comprehensive ambulatory care center which was finalized in early 1989 with the selection of a builder. The project was then transitioned over to his successor upon his retirement in June of 1989.

Jerry belonged to many professional organizations some of which include: Fellow, American College of Health Care Executives Hospital Association; Life Member, American Hospital American Hospital Association; Member, Hospital Association of Pennsylvania; Member, Delaware Valley Hospital Council. Past activities in professional and civic organizations include: Member and Boards of Directors of: Regional Comprehensive Health Planning (RCHP); Chairman Bucks County Steering Committee of the RCHP of Greater Philadelphia; Bucks County Mental Health – Mental Retardation; Hospital Survey Committee for the eight counties of the Philadelphia area; Bucks County Chamber of Commerce; Bucks County TB and Health Association; Health Systems Agency of Southeastern Pennsylvania; Health Advisor (Key Contact) for 15 years, in healthcare matters, on behalf of the American Hospital Association and the Hospital Association of Pennsylvania, to the U.S, Congressmen from the Bucks County District.

As a volunteer in the past Jerry served as a member of the Corporate Board of Directors of Pennswood Village; Chairman of the Finance Committee of Wrightstown Monthly Meeting and Representative to the Representative Meeting, Philadelphia Yearly Meeting of the Religious Society of Friends. He also served as a consultant for hospital organizational and policy development matters for USAID in Lusaka, Zambia (6 months, 1993), Port Said, Egypt (3 months,1995), and Guayaquil, Ecuador (3 months, 1997).

Jerry’s personal interests were boundless. He had a love of swimming, SCUBA diving, sailing, hiking, biking, skiing, studying astrology and navigation, and working on his 20 acre farm.

He is survived by his first wife, Milly Bischoff, and their three daughters, Brenda Schmidt, Linda Nocco (Anthony), Susan Philipps (Robert III), and his six grandchildren, Lisa Haas (Ty), Michael, Robert IV, Thomas, Shawn, and Danielle. Also his loving wife of 35 years, Kay, and her two daughters, M. Kathryn Marshall and Elisabeth Marshall Hopper (Michael).

A private burial of the cremated remains was held on Saturday, October 21st in the Wrightstown Meeting Cemetery.

A memorial service will be held in the Auditorium of Delaware Valley University, 700 E. Butler Avenue, Doylestown, PA 18901 on Saturday, November 18, 2017 at 1:00 pm for all who wish to attend.

In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts to the Doylestown Health Foundation, 595 West State Street, Doylestown, PA 18901 or www.doylestownhealth.org would be appreciated.
