Obituary for Curtis R. Akins

Curtis R. Akins, formerly of Leechburg, PA, passed away on Friday, October 13, 2017, surrounded by his family and his dogs. He was 93.

Born in Vandergrift, PA to the late Willivene L. and Harry O. Akins, Curt resided in Westmorelnd and Armstrong Counties before moving to New Hope, PA, in 2017.

Curt was formerly employed as a master machinist at Hyde Park Foundry in Hyde Park, PA, and at Pittsburgh Plate Glass Research Center (PPG) in Harmer, PA. He was a decorated US Air Force veteran having served in World War II in Italy, France, the Balkans and the Philippines, and was awarded the European-African-Middle Eastern Theater Ribbon with 4 bronze stars, The Asiatic-Pacific Theater Ribbon with 1 Bronze star, Air Medal with 3 Bronze Oak Leaf Clusters, and the Good Conduct Medal. He was the oldest living WWII veteran in Armstong County He was a Past Master and fifty-year member of Bethel Lodge #789 F & AM of Lower Burrell, PA, and a member of Syria Shrine, Pittsburgh, PA. He loved farming. He was proud of his Scots ancestry and was an avid genealogy researcher and reader.

Curt was preceded in death by first wife Evelyn Sue (Brewer) Akins, second wife Susan L. (Mason) Akins, stepson Bruce Wagner, son-in-law Michael Olinger, and grandson Damian King. He is survived by daughters Sharon Akins Easterlin, Susan Akins Olinger, and Amy Akins Caldwell and husband Clifford Caldwell, daughter-in-law Lenore Wagner, grandchildren; Kristine King and husband Charles D. King, Robert Olinger and wife Jeannemarie Anderson Olinger, Gwenyth Ortman, Rheanna Ortman, Mary Wagner, and Eric Wagner; and great grandchildren Charles King and wife Sierra (Garivey) King, Michael King, Catherine, Brendon, and Sarah Olinger.

His memory is cherished and he is solely missed.

Cremation services were private.
