Obituary for Charles H. "Harry" Cathers Sr.

Charles “Harry” Cathers, Sr. passed away on Tuesday, July 11, 2017 at his home in Doylestown, PA. He was 75.

Harry was born August 16, 1941 to William Wallace Cathers, III and Maude Elizabeth (Holcombe) Cathers in Doylestown, PA, the youngest of two children. Harry graduated from Central Bucks High School in Doylestown in 1960.

He served in the United States Army from 1960 to 1964 as a Military Policeman and was stationed at Bad Hersfeld in West Germany.

After leaving military service, Harry attended the State Police Academy in Hershey PA and following graduation began a long career in law enforcement. He was a Doylestown Borough Police Officer from 1964 to 1969, and part time New Britain Police Officer. He briefly left police work and worked as office manager at K&K Truck Service in Doylestown. In 1975, he joined the Bucks County Sheriff's Department where he served for 25 years until his retirement in 2000 at the rank of Lieutenant. Harry also served in the Doylestown Fire Company. He was an entrepreneur and managed significant real estate holdings, with multiple properties in Buckingham, Doylestown and Sullivan County.

Harry loved to spend time with his family and many friends. He dedicated many years of service to local organizations: he was a lifetime member of FOP Lodge 53, Odd Fellows, and the Knights of Golden Eagle. He was also a member of the Deputy Sheriff Association of PA and a 33 year member of American Legion Post 210.

Harry is survived by his longtime sweetheart, Judy Lewis; his son, Timothy William (Michelle) Cathers Sr. daughter, Tammy Jo Cathers, son Christopher Nicholas Cathers, and son, Charles Harry (“Chas”) Cathers Jr.; grandchildren, Madeline (Chris) Redd, Timothy Jr., Michael and Samantha Cathers, Heather (Mario) Martinez, Paul, Jonathan, and Matthew Frankenhauser; nephews and niece, Brian Cathers, Pam (Allan) Tsang, David Cathers, Glen (Alyssa) Cathers, and numerous grandnieces and grandnephews. Harry was preceded in death by his parents and brother, William Wallace Cathers IV.

A Celebration of Harry’s Life will be held at the Varcoe-Thomas Funeral Home, 344 North Main Street, Doylestown, PA 18901 on Saturday, July 29, 2017 at 12 Noon. The family will receive their friends from 10:00 am – 12 Noon prior to the service at the funeral home.

Burial will follow in Doylestown Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to Doylestown Fire Company No.1 and the American Legion Post 210 of Doylestown.
