Obituary for William Michael "Bill" Kapp

William Michael Kapp, 63, of Erwinna PA, passed away peacefully in his home, Saturday June 24, 2017 with his wife and son holding his hands. Born November 18, 1953, in Scranton PA, he was the son of Catherine Regan Kapp and the late Raymond Dennis Kapp.

Bill loved playing baseball and basketball, from the Biddy Basketball and Little League youth programs to his high school teams. He graduated from Bishop Hannan High School in 1971. As a student, he volunteered his time working with special needs children and young adults at Scranton area community service organizations whenever he was not working summers and weekends at Granteed’s Pizza or Eddie’s Nursery and Garden Center. His growing passion for helping developmentally and intellectually disabled children lead him to pursue and achieve a Bachelor’s Degree in Special Education from Bloomsburg University and a Masters Degree in Educational Administration from the University of Scranton.

Bill spent most of his professional career at the Hunterdon Developmental Center in Clinton, NJ fulfilling his vocation. He retired in 2014 as the Assistant Director of the Adaptive Learning Center. During his 34 years of serving as an advocate and school principal for individuals with severe developmental disabilities, he was a true leader and mentor for the young teachers he hired, instructed and inspired. Through his example, he compelled them to be the best educators they could be!

Bill will always be remembered as a gentle giant, who strived to bring out the best in everyone from the students he encountered to the teachers he worked with, and everyone who knew him. His many nieces and nephews will remember Bill’s thoughtful generosity and humorous birthday cards with encouraging personal messages. His mother enjoyed his political and satirical newspaper clippings that he sent to her on a regular basis. He was known for his love of Halloween, the Jets, Penn State Nittany Lions and the Yankees. As a loving dad, he fought a courageous battle against an aggressive illness to enjoy precious time with his son William, who was truly Bill’s hope, his greatest pride and his whole world. Bill will be forever in our minds and in our hearts.

In addition to his mother, he is survived by his wife of 16 years, Amy Utzinger Kapp, and his beloved young son William Jr., his sister Alice Kapp Azzarelli of Dunmore PA, and 3 brothers Raymond Kapp and wife Patricia Jennings Kapp of Middletown, NY, Dr. Dennis Kapp and wife Susan Butler Kapp of Dunmore, PA, and John Kapp and wife Donna Igoe Kapp of Scranton.

Friends, family members and relatives are cordially invited to attend a celebration of life tribute and luncheon on July 15, 12:00 PM-3:00 PM, at La Buona Vita, 200 Reilly St, Dunmore, PA 18512.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Defeat GBM, a research program of the National Brain Tumor Society (www.braintumor.org).

Arrangements by Varcoe-Thomas Funeral Home/Central Bucks Crematory, 344 North Main Street, Doylestown, PA 18901.
