Obituary for David Weeks Leigh

LUMBERVILLE, PA & BETHEL, ME - David Weeks Leigh, 79, of Lumberville, PA and Bethel, ME, died on Sunday, October 2, 2011 after a long illness. Raised in Yardley, PA he graduated from Pennsbury High School in 1950. He attended the University of Tennessee and Lowell Tech Institute and graduated from Salem University, in Salem, MA.

David was an Atomic Veteran, having served in Nevada during the atmospheric test program. Later, he was employed as a civilian at Oak Rdge National Laboratories, in TN; Industrial Reactor Laboratories, in Plainsboro, NJ; and during the clean-up at Three Mile Island, in PA. By the time of his retirement from the military, David had served in the Navy, Army, and Air Force, as well as the Air National Guard. Active duty missions included the Viet Nam War and the 1962 Berlin Crisis in France. He retired with the rank of Master Sergeant and remained active in several veterans' organizations, most recently with Veterans for Patrick Murphy. His last employer was Bechtel Corporation.

David was an active member of AOPA and spent many happy hours flying his plane and getting certified to fly seaplanes while in Alaska. His love of flying led him to volunteer with Freedoms Wings, a non-profit entity dedicated to flying the physically disabled in specially adapted gliders.

David is survived by his wife, Sally Stevens; daughter, Laurel Leigh, of Brigantine, NJ; son Malcolm G. Leigh II, of West Creek, NJ; grandsons, Eric Leigh, of Sarasota, FL, Daniel Leigh, of Tuckerton, NJ and Evan Leigh, of Philadelphia, PA.

In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to Freedom Wings International or a charity of your choice.

Arrangements were under the direction of the Varcoe-Thomas Funeral Home of Doylestown, Inc., Doylestown, PA.
