Obituary for Wilson G. Varcoe

SELLERSVILLE, PENNSYLVANIA - Wilson G. Varcoe, of Sellersville, formerly of Buckingham Springs and Doylestown passed away on Tuesday, September 3, 2013. He was 78. He was the husband of Tanis W. Varcoe and the late Patricia T. Varcoe.

Born in Philadelphia, PA, he was the son of the late William C. & A. Juanita Seaman Varcoe. Wilson was raised in Wycombe, PA and was a 1953 graduate of Wyoming Seminary Prep School. He was a graduate of Temple University and the Eckels School of Mortuary Science. After graduation, he served stateside in the U.S. Army at Fort Hood and the U.S. Army Reserves as a Staff Sergeant.

He began his work career as a Funeral Director with his father, and in 1962 opened the Varcoe Funeral Home which he operated for over 40 years.

Wilson was a very active community leader in Doylestown for many years. He was a past member of Lingohocken Fire Company. He was an early contributor and volunteer coach for many years with DAA. He served on Doylestown Borough Council from 1968-1980 and was Council President from 1978-1980. He was also past president of the Doylestown Lions Club, the Bucks County Funeral Directors Association, and the American Cancer Society of Bucks County. During his years with the American Cancer Society he was also Crusade Chairman of the Southeastern PA Region and a member of the Pennsylvania Board of Governors. He was also Past High Priest of the Doylestown Royal Arch Lodge #270, Past Commander of Mizpah Commandery Lodge #96 and a 50 year member of Doylestown Masonic Lodge #245.

Wilson was most proud of his service to the Doylestown United Methodist Church. He was a 60 year member and served as Chairman on almost every committee at one time at the Church. He found being Chairman of the Building and Expansion Committees the most rewarding.

In his free time Wilson loved to travel, having visited all 50 states and many foreign countries. His hobbies included bird watching, bird carving and boating.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by two sons: W. Scott Varcoe and his wife Jennifer, and Philip T. Varcoe, all of Pipersville, grandchildren, Jessica K. & Brittany T. Varcoe of Doylestown and William F. & Zachary L. Varcoe of Pipersville. He is also survived by his wife s daughter T. Kimberly Flagello, her husband Mike, their children Michael R., Stephen N., and Samantha J., all of Pipersville and her daughter in law Nancy S. DeCoursey of Silverdale.

A service will be held at the Doylestown United Methodist Church, 320 East Swamp Road, Doylestown, PA on Monday, September 9, 2013 at 10:00a.m.

The family will receive relatives and friends at the Varcoe-Thomas Funeral Home, 344 North Main Street, Doylestown, PA 18901 on Sunday, September 8, 2013 from 7-9:00 p.m. A Masonic service will be held on Sunday at 8:30p.m.

Visitation will also be held from 9-10:00 a.m. on Monday at the church prior to services.

Interment will be held in Mechanicsville Cemetery immediately following the church service.

Memorial contributions may be made in Wilson s memory to the Doylestown United Methodist Church.
