BUCKINGHAM TOWNSHIP, PENNSYLVANIA - Samuel Greenhalgh of Buckingham Township, PA passed away peacefully in his sleep on Friday, November 20, 2015 at his residence outside of Doylestown. He was 79.
Born in Manchester England, Sam came to the United States in 1960 to accept a scholarship to study at the University of Pennsylvania, spending his first few months in Rhode Island before moving to Philadelphia for school. It was here he also met his future wife, Monika, and eventually settled, moving to Rushland PA, before moving to Buckingham, PA 38 years ago.
Sam received both his BS and MS Degree in Engineering and Fluid Dynamics from the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia PA. He first worked for Scott Paper Company in Philadelphia before moving to Newtown, Bucks County, where he was a Professor of Science and Engineering at Bucks County Community College and taught engineering, computer-aided design (CAD), drafting, and physics for 30 years. He also worked, at first part time, then full time, as an aeronautical engineer for the US Navy at the Naval Air Development Center in Warminster PA. He retired from both positions in 1996, but remained busy through independent engineering consulting work well into his 70 s.
Sam enjoyed wood carving, playing the piano, sailing, playing with his grandchildren, and sitting by a warm fire with Monika and his cat Fluffy. As a youngster in England, he played tennis on the semi-professional circuit for several years, as well as cricket and rugby.
Sam was the beloved husband of 50 years to Monika Greenhalgh (nee Spitzkopf), a devoted father of Walter Greenhalgh and wife Heidi, Skott Greenhalgh and wife Elizabeth, and Oliver Greenhalgh, a dear brother of Harold Greenhalgh and wife Marie, and the late Ellis Greenhalgh, and the loving grandfather of Mark, Andrew, Abigail, Ellison and Nathan Greenhalgh.
A memorial celebration will be held for Sam at the Varcoe-Thomas Funeral Home, 344 North Main Street, Doylestown, PA 18901 on Saturday, December 12th from 12:00 until 2:00 pm, with a private gathering at the Greenhalgh family residence in Doylestown to follow.
Cremation services were private.
