NEWTOWN & DOYLESTOWN, PENNSYLVANIA - Elizabeth (Betty) Berger Porter of Newtown, PA formerly of Doylestown, PA passed away on Tuesday, November 24, 2015 in Pennswood Village, Newtown, PA. She was 97 years old.

Born in 1918 in Lumberville, PA she was the daughter of the late Rebecca (Reba) A.H. Berger and Henry J. Berger. Betty was the beloved wife of the late Thomas Porter, who came to the United States from County Donegal in Ireland.

Betty was a 1935 graduate of Doylestown High School, where she was Valedictorian of the class. She received a BS Degree in Education from the University of Pennsylvania and later received a MS Degree from the same institution. Her first job was teaching English at Doylestown High School and later as a guidance counselor and class advisor for Central Bucks High School. Betty was awarded "The Oscar for Teacher Award" in 1957.

For many years, she taught English as a second language to the Polish Priests and Brothers at The Shrine of Our Lady of Czestochowa. Betty was also a member of the VITA Board of Directors in 1991.

Her Christian faith was the driving force in all areas of her life. She was an active and involved member of the Doylestown Presbyterian Church for over 60 years. While there, she was in charge of the " Beginners Department," a group of 40-45 children, and also served as an Elder, Deacon, Clerk of Session, Bethel Bible teacher and was a member of the Samaritan Class, (which her mother founded). When she transferred membership to The Anchor Presbyterian Church in Wrightstown Betty continued to be active even preaching on occasion.

Betty was deeply involved with Girl Scouts in Buckingham and was a co-leader of Troop No. 38 with Mary Decoursey for 20 years. Some of the members have continued to meet two times a year and in August 2012 received an award in recognition of the troop s longevity of over 67 years.

Her enthusiasm for travel took her all over the world from Europe to Mongolia to China, India, Papua, New Guinea, Australia and more. She moved to Pennswood Village located in Newtown, PA in 1990 and served as a resident member of the Corporate Board and also as a member of the Pennswood Resident Board.

Betty was a true Renaissance woman who lived life to the fullest.

Betty is survived by several cousins and many of Tom 's relatives in Ireland. She was preceded in death by her sister Catherine. Betty will be sadly missed by her family and many dear friends.

She was very grateful for all the loving care she received from the nursing staff at Pennswood Village these last two months and for the many visits from her friends.

A memorial service will be held at Pennswood Village, Penn Hall, 1382 Newtown-Langhorne Road, Newtown, PA 18940 on Thursday, December 10th at 11 am.
