Obituary for Jeanne Y. McKown

DOYLESTOWN, PENNSYLVANIA - Jeanne Y. McKown passed away at her residence in Doylestown, Pennsylvania on Saturday, February 6, 2016.

She was born in Washington, PA to the late George and Mary (Johnson) Young. Jeanne resided in Sandy Creek, NY from 1956 until 2012 when she moved to Wesley Enhanced Living in Doylestown.

Jeanne was married to Bob (Whitey) McKown for 56 years, until his death in 2009, and remained deeply devoted to his memory. She was the glue of her family and delighted in reunions, which were held frequently. Her family includes son Rob and wife Sandy of Asheville, NC; son Chris and wife Abby of Milton, MA; and daughter Sue and husband Russ Holihan of Doylestown, PA. Grammie has five grandchildren: Colleen McKown, Lauren Holihan, Kristen Holihan, Julia McKown and Eliza McKown.

Jeanne lived life on her terms. This included a vigorous daily walk and numerous civic and church activities. When she moved into a group living situation, she was a self-appointed ambassador of goodwill and cheer to residents new and old. She had friends too numerous to mention. She was a lover of the arts including music, theater, literature, and National Public Radio.

Jeanne received a Bachelor Degree in Education from Penn State University and later a Masters Degree in Education from SUNY (State University of New York at Oswego, NY). She was employed as an elementary school teacher with the Sandy Creek Central School District of Sandy Creek, NY for 25 years.

Jeanne was a former member of Sandy Creek United Methodist Church and choir and more recently attended Doylestown United Methodist Church. She was a member of Kappa Kappa Gamma at Penn State University; was a former Board of Director with Northern Oswego County Health Services, Inc.; a member of Oswego County and NY State Retired Teachers; a charter member of the “Gardening Friends” of Sandy Creek; and a member of the North Country Chorale Society. Jeanne also held several volunteer positions with Wesley Enhanced Living, the Friendship Shop, the Red Cross, WRVO (NPR), Central NY Food Bank, and the Sandy Creek Food Pantry, where she founded an annual five-mile fundraising walk, which continues to be held in her honor.

A memorial service will be held at Doylestown United Methodist Church, 320 E. Swamp Road, Doylestown, PA 18901 on Saturday, February 13th at 11:30 am. The family will receive friends at the church from 10:00-11:30 am prior to the service at the church.
